I’ve always loved sports, and I’ve enjoyed being a sports writer for almost 22 years.
When I think about my career, I can’t help but to think of David Johnson. I remember Johnson, who was the sports editor at the time, interviewing me when I went up to the Bolivar Commercial in late June or early July of 1998. It wasn’t long after the interview that I got the call, and he wanted to know if I wanted the job as sports writer at the paper. I said yes, and the rest was history.
From 1998-2002, Johnson was my supervisor, and he showed me the ropes. He showed me what to look for in photos, and he really taught me the importance of not just covering the game but putting the reader at the game when I wrote my stories. He laid the foundation for my career.
In recent weeks, Johnson and his family have been going through a difficult time as he and his wife Ashley are fighting COVID-19, known as the Coronavirus. Ashley has been doing well health wise, but David has been on a ventilator. David, who currently covers Ole Miss sports for 247Sports in Oxford, has had his share of ups and downs, but he is hanging in there.
I remember David’s work ethic at the paper. He was a perfectionist and put everything into what he did to have the best sports section possible. It doesn’t surprise me that he is putting up one heck of a fight against this virus.
David’s passion for sports and his dedication to his family are limitless. David and Ashley have raised three great kids. Two of them, son Eli and daughter Sydney, are students at Ole Miss, while daughter Tori Kate, 5, is the youngest.
On behalf of myself and everyone at The Bolivar Commercial as well as the entire community, y’all are in our prayers. Keep fighting David. Get well soon.
