The National Collegiate Athletic Association has announced that all spring and winter championships have been cancelled over concerns regarding the spread of the COVID-19 virus, more commonly known as coronavirus.
Here’s is the official statement released by the NCAA.
“Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men’s and women’s 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.”
The Delta State University women’s basketball team was scheduled to compete in the NCAA Division II South Region Women’s Basketball Tournament in Jackson, Tenn. while Delta State University’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were competing in the NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving National Championships in Geneva, Ohio. The swim meet started Wednesday.
A decision has yet to be made on the completion of the spring sports season in the Gulf South Conference. The league’s Board of Directors is expected to meet on Friday morning to make a decision on how to proceed moving forward.
