Region 3-5A Tournament
Cleveland Central Boys 55, Neshoba Central 51
The Cleveland Central High School Wolves picked up a big win over the Neshoba Central High School Rockets in the first round of the Region 3-5A Tournament Monday in Canton.
CCHS improved to 15-13.
CCHS will take on Holmes County Central in the championship game of the region tournament Friday in Canton at 8:30 p.m.
Neshoba Central Girls 47, Cleveland Central 46
The Cleveland Central High School Lady Wolves lost by one point to the Neshoba Central High School Lady Rockets Monday in the first round of the Region 3-5A Tournament at Canton.
Tanzania Lloyd scored 12 points to lead CCHS. The Lady Wolves have lost four of their last five games after going 19-2 in their first 21 games of the year.
“We’ve gotten a little complacent here toward the end,” CCHS head coach Whitney Williams said. “Monday, some things didn’t go our way. Like I told them with traveling two-plus hours, we still have to be ready to go once tip-off starts. Tomorrow is due or die, so we have to be ready to play.”
The Lady Wolves will play Canton in the consolation game Friday at 4 p.m.
North 4A State Tournament
Bayou Girls 56, Lamar 16
The Bayou Academy Lady Colts turned in a dominating performance in the first round of the North 4A Girls State Tournament Tuesday by defeating the Lamar Lady Raiders in Senatobia.
Bayou improved to 23-7 overall. The Lady Colts are 20-1 when they’ve scored 50 or more points.
“Lamar had a girl that could get points, and I put Sydney Davis and Mary Ansley Chrestman on her,” Bayou head coach Wesley Aldridge said. “We made it hard on her and that girl didn’t score, and she was averaging over 20 points a game.”
Madison Jenkins scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead the Lady Colts, followed by Davis with 12 points and six rebounds.
Bayou will play Leake in the North 4A State Semifinals Friday at 5:15 p.m. The winner will play in the North State Title game Saturday at 2:15 p.m., while the loser will play in the consolation game at 1 p.m.
Region 3-2A Tournament
Bayou Boys 72, Lamar 64
The Bayou Academy Colts won for the third time in the last four games by defeating the Lamar Raiders Tuesday in the first round of the 4A Boys State Basketball Tournament in Senatobia.
Bayou improved to 15-14.
Brett Burrell led the Colts with 20 points, followed by Clay Taylor with 14 points and Reese Aycock with 12 points.
“We executed in the first quarter really well,” Bayou head coach Wesley Aldridge said. “The guys played extremely hard. At the end, we had to make free throws to win it, and we were 10-for-10 in the fourth quarter.”
Bayou will play Heritage in the North 4A State Semifinals Friday 7:45 p.m. in Senatobia. The winner will play in the championship game Saturday at
5:15 p.m., while the loser will play in the consolation game at 4 p.m.
Region 3-2A Tournament
Northside Girls 40, O’Bannon 11
The Northside High School Lady Gators cruised past the O’Bannon High School Lady Greenwaves Tuesday in the first round of the Region 3-2A Tournament in Shelby.
Mikebra Morris led the Lady Gators with 20 points, followed by Reneisha Myles with 13 points.
Region 6-1A Tournament
West Bolivar Girls 57, Ray Brooks 37
The West Bolivar High School Lady Eagles defeated the Shaw High School Lady Hawks Tuesday in the first round of the Region 6-1A Girls Basketball Tournament in Rosedale.
Shamyria Huff scored 17 points to lead the Lady Eagles, followed by Akayla Smith and Kelsey Phillips with 12 points each.
West Bolivar will battle Shaw in the semifinals of the Region 6-1A Tournament tonight at 7 p.m.
Ray Brooks Boys 50, Leflore County 48
The Ray Brooks High School Tigers edged out the Leflore County High School Tigers in the first round of the Region 6-1A Boys Basketball Tournament Tuesday in Rosedale.
Ray Brooks will battle Shaw in the semifinals of the Region 6-1A Tournament tonight at 5:30 p.m.
Northside Boys 63, Charleston 35
The Northside High School Gators turned in a solid performance to pick up a dominating win against the Charleston High School Tigers in the semifinals of the Region 3-2A Tournament Wednesday at the Isaiah Peterson Gymnasium in Shelby.
Northside improved to 15-12.
The Gators outscored the Tigers 18-6 in the first quarter and 20-6 in the last quarter.
“We came out focused and played together defensively,” Northside head coach Marlon Dorsey said. “We did start getting fouls, but I told the guys to settle down at halftime. We calmed down and focused in the second half. We played good team defense.”
Jaylen Ward led the Gators with 15 points, followed by Karltavis Burrage with 12 points, Terrick Latham with 10 points and Semaj Daniels with nine points.
Northside will play Coahoma County in the championship game Friday at 8:30 p.m. in Shelby.
Leland Girls 38, Northside 35
The Northside High School Lady Gators lost a tough one to the Leland High School Lady Cubs Wednesday in the semifinals of the Region 3-2A Tournament in Shelby.
Northside fell to 18-10.
Reneisha Myles led the Lady Gators with 16 points.
Northside will play Charleston in the consolation game at 4 p.m. Friday in Shelby.
North 1A State Tournament
Briarfield Girls 56, NSA 16
The North Sunflower Academy Lady Rebels saw their season come to an end as they lost to Briarfield in the first round of the North 1A State Girls Basketball Tournament Wednesday at Calhoun City.
