Takeila Wright scored a game-high 18 points while Ashleigh McKinney scored 10 points with nine rebounds to lead the Cleveland Central High School Lady Wolves to a 51-21 victory over the Canton Lady Tigers Tuesday.
The win improved Cleveland to 15-2 on the year with a 1-0 mark in Region 3-5A.
Cleveland opened the year winning their first seven games before dropping two in a row. Since the two losses, the Lady Wolves have won eight in a row with Tuesday’s win.
Head coach Whitney Williams said there seemed to be a few jitters for the team with it being the first district game, but the team was able to put things together as the game progressed.
“It was big for us to get a win against Canton,” Williams said. “They have been the team that has put us out the last two years in the district tournament. It was a big win, and I just hope we can build off of it.”
CCHS did not shoot the ball well in the opening quarter, but because of solid defense, the team took an 8-0 lead into the second quarter. By halftime, the Lady Wolves led the Lady Tigers 18-9.
Midway through the third quarter, the Lady Wolves held a 25-13 advantage but used full-court pressure defense to spark a 10-0 run, which gave the squad a 35-13 lead.
Cleveland entered the final quarter leading Canton 38-19. The Lady Wolves scored the first eight points of the quarter to increase their lead 46-19 as they ended up cruising to the 51-21 win.
Williams said when the team has a bad shooting night it’s great to have a strong defense to rely on to manufacture points.
“Our defense has guided us all year in helping us to get easy baskets,” Williams said. We try to put pressure on teams and that helps us out a lot. Earlier in the year, we lost two games against two very good fundamentally sound teams and that was a learning process for us. We changed some things following those losses during Thanksgiving, and we have improved.”
