Entering Friday night, the Northside High School Gators were riding high as they had given up just six points and were perfect through the first six games of their second season.
The Gators had their toughest task to date as they traveled to Charleston to play the Charleston High School Tigers. Charleston was a powerhouse in 3A that moved down to 2A. Northside’s game with Charleston was a Region 3-2A contest.
At the end of the night, the Gators continued to chomp down on the competition as they tamed the Tigers 22-8. Northside improved to a perfect 7-0 with a 2-0 mark in the region. Charleston fell to 4-4 with a 1-1 region record. Northside stretched its overall winning streak to 10 games dating back to last year. Northside was formed last year from the merger of John F. Kennedy and Broad Street High School.
The Gators turned in a solid team effort on both sides of the ball.
“The guys are playing together as a team right now,” Northside head football coach Tavares Johnson said. “It’s not about one individual. It’s about a collective group. The players read these comments on social media about how they haven’t played anybody, and they’re a fluke. It motivates them to play harder.
“I tell them it doesn’t matter what people say, it matters what you do on the football field. They wanted to prove they were for real. We just play the teams on our schedule and let the chips fall where they may.
“The defense did an outstanding job. The defense had the offense’s back and the offense had the defense’s back. Special teams played well. We’re playing as a team right now.”
Northside jumped out on top 16-0 and led 22-8 at halftime. Both teams battled hard on defense with the Gators coming out on top.
Jaterrance Moore had a huge night throwing the football for Northside, as he went 14-of-22 passing for 218 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.
Karltavis Burrage led all Northside receivers by catching four passes for 139 yards with a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. Terrick Latham caught two passes for 70 yards with a touchdown, Tyrese Greyer had two receptions for 41 yards, DeVes Seaberry caught two passes for 12 yards, Judson Hudson caught a pass for 11 yards, Thaddeus Latham caught a touchdown pass for seven yards and Jaylen Ward caught a five-yard pass and scored a 2-point conversion to round out the Gators’ receiving corps.
In the rushing game, Thaddeus Latham ran for 59 yards on 11 carries to lead the Gators’ ground attack. Semaj Daniels ran for just 16 yards on seven carries, but he completed 2-of-4 passes for 38 yards to aid the offense.
On defense for the Gators, DeAnthony Brown recorded eight tackles,
TreShun Johnson had seven tackles with a tackle-for-loss, Cordarrian Hickman racked up 6.5 tackles with two tackles-for-loss and Ward had six tackles to lead the way.
Northside will return to the gridiron Friday when the team travels to Marks to play MS Palmer in another region game.
