The Shelby Chamber of Commerce has been busy this summer adding a special touch of nature to the city.
Over the last several weeks Lula B. Atkins, Geraldine Sisson, Nathaniel Grammer and Geraldine C. Grammer have been chopping beds, pruning rose bushes, pulling grass and watering plants.
Geraldine said, “Plants are watered every three to four days of each week unless it rains because the ground dries out fast.
“We have a total of five flower beds and some potted plants,” she mentioned.
The idea to beautify the downtown area of Shelby came about in 2009 during a chamber meeting and several organizations jumped in to help, including Shelby Women United, which was instrumental in donating funds to finance the Flower Bedding Project.
Grammer said the chamber was reorganized in 2009 for the purpose of advancing civic, commercial, industrial, economic, social and general interest of the people of Shelby and the vicinity.
Grammer added Shelby has a new business and two more are about to open and ribbon cutting ceremonies will be held as soon as they ready.
“I am proud and happy to say that the chamber has a membership of 40 members, including businesses. Hopefully, we will have more members in the future,” said Grammer.
Other chamber members who have helped with the beautification project are Ethel Sigle, Anna Perry, Doris Bridgett and Sharda Johnson.
Community volunteers who have lent a hand include Eunice Sanders, Mario Sanders, Eddie Lymon, Dan Johnson, Billy Johnson and John Walker.
