DSU women 62, VSU 53
The Delta State University Lady Statesmen earned a huge road win in Gulf South Conference basketball action by defeated the Valdosta State University Lady Blazers at Valdosta, Ga. Saturday.
Delta State improved to 13-8 with an 11-6 mark in the conference. The Lady Statesmen have five of its last seven road games.
Rhandi Ball scored seven points in the game to become the 36th member of the 1,000-point club at DSU. She has 1,006 for her career as she is tied with Moe Bell for 35th on the school’s all-time scoring list.
Chelsey Rhodes went 8-of-11 from the floor and scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Lady Statesmen, followed by Becca Ruckes with 15 points.
DSU will return to the court on Thursday when the team hosts UA-Huntsville in a GSC showdown. Tip-off is set for 5: 30 p.m.
DSU men 80, VSU 69
The Delta State University Statesmen got a much needed win in Gulf South Conference basketball action by beating the Valdosta State University Blazers in Valdosta, Ga. on Saturday.
The win ended a five-game losing streak for DSU as the Statesmen improved to 12-11 with a 9-8 mark in the conference.
Devin Schmidt scored 22 points for DSU to record his eighth straight 15-plus point scoring effort. Schmidt also dished out a team-high six assists. Former East Side star PJ Davis scored 16 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to record his sixth double-double of the year. Zelvin Smith scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, and Alister Chisholm scored 13 points and pulled down six rebounds to aid DSU.
DSU will return to the court on Thursday when the team hosts UA-Huntsville in a GSC showdown. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
DSU softball goes 5-1
The Delta State University Lady Statesmen went 5-1 in the Charger Chillout Softball Tournament at the University of Huntsville in Alabama this weekend.
DSU defeated Maryville 5-2 and Montevallo 10-2 on Friday and Ohio Dominica 5-4 and Kentucky Wesleyan 4-1 on Saturday to bring its record to 6-0 at that time which was the best start in head coach Casey Charles’ seven-year tenure with the school.
DSU suffered its first loss of the year on Sunday by losing to North Georgia 11-7 but came back to beat Southern Arkansas 3-2 to close out the Charger Chillout.
DSU, now 7-1, will travel to Livingston, Ala. to take on the University of West Alabama this weekend to open Gulf South Conference play in a three-game series. The team two teams will play in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. and will conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
DSU baseball starts 0-3
The Delta State University Statesmen started their 2015 season on a rough note as they lost three straight games to Nova Southeastern University this weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
DSU lost the first game on Friday 10-3 and lost the next two games on Saturday by the scores of 3-2 and 1-0.
This weekend marked the first time DSU has been swept in a three-game series since 2011.
DSU (0-3) will return to the diamond on Wednesday when the team travels to Monticello, Ark. to play UA-Monticello at 2 p.m.
DSU tennis opens season strong
The Delta State University Statesmen and Lady Statesmen started their tennis season on the right foot Saturday in Cleveland against Stillman.
The Statesmen defeated Stillman in the men’s matches 9-0 at DSU, while the Lady Statesmen conquered Stillman 8-1 in nine matches at the Cleveland Country Club.
The Lady Statesmen are scheduled to hit the road to Arkadelphia, Ark. as they play Harding on Thursday, Ouachita Baptist on Friday, Southwest Baptist on Saturday and Henderson State on Sunday.
The Statesmen are scheduled to travel to Arkadelphia the next week as they play Harding on Feb. 19, Ouachita Baptist on Feb. 20 and Southwest Baptist on Feb. 21.
