Little guitar speaks volumes for area

Bolivar County lovers and visitors now have a special souvenir available for them the next time they visit the Martin and Sue King Heritage Railroad Museum.

Lisa Miller, executive director for the museum, designed guitars inspired by images in the Delta after a similar guitar was given to her as a Christmas gift two years ago.  

Whitehead lays out vision for middle school

The Cleveland Central Middle School faculty and parents met on Thursday to discuss plans for the upcoming school year.

The purpose of the meeting was to allow the public to preview East Side High School as the new CCMS.

Randy Grierson, the new principal for Cleveland Central High School, hosted a meeting for parents, students, and faculty on Monday to discuss plans for the upcoming school year.

After having faculty stand for recognition, and students and parents do the same, Grierson began the meeting with the mission statement.

Cleveland prepares for good time with Mardi Gras parade

The Cleveland-Bolivar County Chamber of Commerce will host a Mardi Gras Parade Feb. 25 at 5 p.m. in downtown Cleveland.

According to Lisa Cooley, director of Team Cleveland/Main Street said, “The parade was the brain-child of the amazing Haley Kelly. She and her family bring some of the most fun ideas to the table.”

Genetta Reed-Winter

Genetta Reed-Winter, 62, of Greenville died Tuesday, August 6, 2016, in Greenville. 

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. at St. Matthew A.M.E. Church in Greenville with Rev. John Perry officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Galilee Cemetery in Shaw, under the direction of W.S. Brandon Mortuary in Cleveland.


Roy L. “Rusty” Martin

 Roy L. “Rusty” Martin, 62, passed away Saturday, July 30, 2016, at his daughter’s home near Nashville in LaVergne, TN. 

Rusty’s life began on January 5, 1954. Born in the heart of the Mississippi Delta in Cleveland to Edward Odessa and Mary Lee Lampard Martin. Rusty was a protector and defender from his early days of service in the National Guard, his time as a Mississippi Highway patrolman, who once worked for the governor of the state of Mississippi.


Janet Lusk Garrison


Janet Lusk Garrison, 63, of Venice, FL, passed away August 1, 2016. Born in Cleveland, on August 5, 1952, she worked in the medical profession as a nurse and retired in 2011. Janet enjoyed golf, tennis, running, bicycle riding, travel, and cooking.

obama task force

With the recent shootings involving law enforcement, President Obama took to the press Thursday to address the death of two men by police gunfire. He then returned to the press to express his sadness over the death of five officers in Dallas.

A concept the president continued to reiterate during his press conferences was his Task Force on 21st Century Policing. In 2015, the Task Force released recommendations to provide meaningful solutions to help law enforcement agencies and communities strengthen trust and collaboration, while ushering the nation into the next phase of community-focused policing.

As the amount of days between summer and the upcoming school year becomes shorter and shorter, student health should be a top priority on the to do list. Add a doctor's visit to your back-to-school list this summer to ensure that your child's immunizations are up-to-date. 

Parents in Bolivar County are reminded that children entering school are required to be vaccinated against a variety of diseases.


Afternoon wreck shuts down highway

Around 2 p.m. on Monday, Mississippi Highway Patrol Troopers along with Bolivar County Sheriff's Department and Bolivar County Volunteer Fire Department were called to an accident on U.S. Highway 61 near Merigold. 

According to Trooper Tony Dunn, Roy Caston, 56, of Bolivar County was traveling south on U.S. 61 driving a John Deere backhoe when a tractor trailer pulling a mobile home attempted to pass.
