While camp is normally full by this time, a few fortunate children can still have a shot at participating.
In the 12-18 year old camp, which runs from June 26- July 2, there are several openings to be filled.
This amazing camp gives students the opportunity to choose their own schedule, giving them a sense of independence while still following the curriculum.
“Classes are offered in dance, theater, music, visual arts and the literary arts in a multiple period-per-day format,” said Laura Howell, the arts education coordinator. “Students take a total of five courses per day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.”
Howell said the arts camp has seven faculty members this summer, five of whom are Delta State professors.
Cetin Oguz, associate professor of art, will be teaching courses in painting and drawing.
Dr. Karen Fosheim, professor of music, will be leading West African drumming and dance and West African Djembé Rhythms And Techniques classes.
Dr. Teri Herron, assistant professor of music, will instruct vocal music classes as well as an introductory belly dancing class.
Dr. Shelley Collins of the music department and Allan Mitchell of the English department will be co-teaching an interdisciplinary class on using music to inspire creative writing.
Teaching artist Jodie Engle of Hattiesburg will be leading three drama classes; an introduction to the fundamentals of acting, a scene-writing class, and the ever-popular improvising for the stage.
Brittany Nunes, a choreographer and dance instructor from Jackson, will instruct jazz, modern, and hip-hop dance classes.
“Campers will stay on campus in Delta State dorms, eat at the Young Mauldin Cafeteria, and study in Delta State classrooms, studios and theaters,” she said. “Evening activities will take place across campus at locations such as the Delta State fitness trail, the Wyatt Gymnasium, the Bologna Performing Arts Center, and the quadrangle.”
A field trip is also planned to the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center in Indianola.
A Visual Arts Reception and Literary Arts Reading is planned 7 p.m. July 1 in the Bologna Performing Arts Center lobby.
The performing arts classes will give their final performance at 10 a.m. July 2 in the Delta & Pine Land Theater at the Bologna Performing Arts Center.
