The fifth ranked Delta State University Statesmen had another sweep in Gulf South Conference baseball action as they took all three games from the Union University Bulldogs this weekend in Jackson, Tenn.
DSU won the first game Saturday 12-6 and both games Sunday by the scores of 4-3 in 10 innings and 13-3 in seven innings. The series sweep was DSU’s fifth of the year in GSC play.
DSU improved to 28-6 with a 17-3 mark in the GSC, while Union fell to 11-26 with a 6-15 mark in the GSC.
At the plate for DSU, Zack Shannon went 6-for-11 with a home run, a double, seven RBIs and three runs scored, Emil Ellis went 6-for-12 with three RBIs and seven runs scored, Juwan Burney went 6-for-13 with three doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored, Clay Casey went 6-for-14 with a home run, a double, five RBIs and three runs scored, Josh Russell went 4-for-9 with three RBIs and five runs scored, Justin Nussbaum went 4-for-13 with three RBIs and five runs scored, Nick Morgan went 4-for-13 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored, Brian Lane went 4-for-14 with two doubles, two RBIs and three runs scored and Jason Popovich went 3-for-14 with a double, four RBIs and three runs scored.
On the mound for DSU, Seth Birdsong (7-0) earned the win in game one by giving up five runs, one earned, on nine hits with six strikeouts and three walks in seven innings of work, Hunter Riggins (2-1) picked up the win in game two by giving up three hits with a walk and four strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of work and Tyler Walton (5-0) earned the win in game three by striking out five with a hit batter in four shutout, hitless innings of relief.
Jonathan Lindsey turned in a solid relief outing in game one by giving up an unearned run on three hits with a strikeout and no walks in two innings of work, Dalton Minton turned in a solid start in game two by giving up three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in 7 1/3 innings of work and Jason Lott struck out three and gave up one hit in a scoreless inning of relief in game three. Melvin Frazer started game three for the Statesmen and gave up three runs on three hits with five walks and a strikeout in two innings of work.
DSU will be back in action Tuesday when the team travels to Searcy, Ark. to play Harding at 6 p.m.
