RULEVILLE — The Ruleville Central Lady Tigers began their playoff march in fine form by defeating the Holly Springs Lady Hawks 60-39 here Monday night in the first round of the 3A Girls Basketball State Playoffs.
The Lady Tigers, at 16-11, will be back in action Friday night to play Choctaw County in the second round at Ackerman at 7 p.m. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Jefferson County-Jefferson Davis County game in the quarterfinals at Jackson State University on Mar. 3.
Monday night’s effort was a vast improvement from Friday’s 62-34 loss to Humphreys County in the championship game of the Region 3-3A Tournament.
“Tonight, they played with more resilience and more endurance,” Ruleville Central head girls basketball coach Chiquita Bracey said. “They were motivated by knowing this would possibly be their last game.”
Jacoriah Bracey scored 34 points, and Makevia Shaw tallied 20 points to lead the Lady Tigers. Makaylah Turner also nailed a key 3-pointer in the second half.
“What I’m relying on to pull us through the end of the season is my other players,” Coach Bracey added. “We know JB is going to come in bring us everything she needs to bring us each night. Now, I’m focusing on my role players and they are going to have to get in there and score baskets and that’s what they did tonight. We knew that we were fast and quick, and we played it to our advantage and got a lot of key baskets.”
